Amazon and Bowker join rush for new book domain extension

As you might have heard, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Named and Numbers (ICANN) is currently entertaining applications for new top-level domain name extensions (TLDs) to co-exist with the likes of .com and .org. Unsurprisingly, there is serious competition for some of the most commercially desirable TLDs, and the .book extension is being chased by nine companies, including Amazon and Bowker.

As you can see from this list, the .book domain is being chased by DotBook, Double Bloom, Bowker, Amazon and five others. ICANN is believed to be encouraging competitors to try to work out conflicts amongst themselves, with the option of an auction system being set up in the (quite likely) eventuality that resolutions can’t be found. Control of .book would obviously be an advantage for any company seeking to monopolize the online book world.
