Even so, the overall picture is pretty dismal. Album sales, which have been declining for years, fell below 4m in one week for the first time ever in August, marking the lowest point since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991. According to Joel Freimark in Death and Taxes, “Given that reality, it’s safe to say that in nearly every aspect, 2014 will mark the most disappointing and dismal year ever in terms of mainstream music sales.”
