Mary J. Blige is doing just that, with Tuesday’s release of her new album, The London Sessions.
The singer exploded onto the scene in 1992 with debut What’s the 411?, selling nearly 25 million albums in the United States and picking up nine Grammy Awards since. But her last record to sell more than 1 million copies was 2007’s Growing Pains, with sliding sales and a mixed bag of reviews for each subsequent effort. Her most recent outing, an album’s worth of new songs for the Think Like a Man Too soundtrack, debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling fewer than 9,000 copies its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
