WITH SIX DEBUTS IN the top ten, overall album sales are up 7% over last week but down 5% over the same week as last year. Year-to-date album sales remain down 7% over the same period in 2013. Physical CD sales are up 4% over last week, down 3% over the same week last year and down 7% year-to-date over 2013. Digital album sales are up 12% over last week, down 7% over the same week last year and down 8% year-to-date over 2013. Digital track sales are up 8% over last week, down 15% over the same week last year and down 12% year-to-date over 2013. Track-equivalent album sales are up 7.2% over last week and down 8.8% year-to-date over 2013.
Coldplay pick up their fifth straight number one debut as “Ghost Stories” enters the Top Albums chart at No. 1 with 49,000 units sold. It is the biggest one week sales total for any album since One Direction’s “Midnight Memories” sold 63,000 units in November 2013. With 34,000 digital albums sold, it is the biggest one week total for a digital album since Beyonce’s self-titled album sold 35,000 digital copies in December.
