They’re both about talent, showmanship, and deciding who can belt out the best tune, but last week’s CMT Music Awards topped the 68th Annual Tony Awards – at least on Twitter TWTR +3.04%.
The CMT Music Awards topped the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings (NTTR) Weekly Top Ten Series and Specials list with 397,000 event-related Tweets that were seen by a Unique Audience ADNC +1.59% of 5.7 million people, and last night’s Tony Awards on CBS CBS +0.41% saw 440,000 Tweets that were seen by a Unique Audience of 5.24 million people. Hugh Jackman bounced from city streets, across the red carpet and onto the stage at Radio City Music Hall as host of the Tonys. He also jump roped with Rocky and rapped with T.I. and LL Cool J in a hip-hop rendition of “The Music Man.”
The opening of the CMT Music Awards was a hodgepodge of singing, performance, and randomness, and host Kristen Bell (who also did a Jay Z-Solangeelevator spoof) quipped, “Did anyone else notice there were a lot of dudes in that number?” after the opening act featuring Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan. “I mean we love ‘em all. But I just want to say while we do enjoy the sausage fest that is the country charts these days, I’m personally also proud that CMT has invited a woman to host the show alone.”
Audra McDonald made history at the Tonys when she won best lead actress in a play for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. It was her sixth Tony, which makes her the biggest Tony winner of all time. McDonald thanked her parents for “disobeying the doctor’s orders and not medicating their hyperactive girl, and finding out what she was into instead, and pushing her into the theater.”
Bryan Cranston won his first Tony for playing play for playing former President Lyndon B. Johnson in All the Way, which also won Best Play.
Past host Neil Patrick Harris won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his work inHedwig and the Angry Inch, which also won Best Revival of a Musical.
Yet another awards show came in third according to Nielsen: Miss USA 2014: Live From Baton Rouge on NBC saw 282,000 Tweets. Top 10 staples Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, The Bachelorette, and Game of Thrones helped round out the list.
