U2 releases new album for free on iTunes

U2 – who released some of the most acclaimed albums in the 1980s including The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum – could have expected major sales for a new album.

While Apple did not disclose financial arrangements for the free release, U2 has collaborated for years on products with the iPod and iPhone company.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook called it the largest album release in history because there are more than 500 million iTunes users. But the giveaway is unlikely to count toward official music sales figures at Nielsen SoundScan because it was distributed for free.
