Ed Sheeran lands his first chart-topping album as “X” (Warner) debuts at number one on the Top Albums chart with 31,000 units sold. It is the third highest one week sales total so far in 2014, only trailing Coldplay and Serge Fiori. With 72% of the sales total coming from digital, it is the second highest one week Digital Album sales total for the year, only behind Coldplay.
His debut album, “+,” debuted and peaked at No. 5 in June 2012 with 8,100 first week sales. “Sing,” the first single from “X,” jumps 20-7 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and picks up Greatest Gainer/Digital honours, as the song moves to No. 12 on the Digital Song chart. Mastodon has the only other debut in the Top Albums top ten, coming in at No. 4 with 4,000 units sold of “Once More Round The Sun” (Warner). It is their first top ten album and best one week sales total to date, surpassing the No. 13 peak of their 2009 release “Crack The Skye.”
Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” (Universal) remains at No. 1 on the Canadian Hot 100 for the third straight week. After a week out of the top spot, the song returns to No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart with a 12%
download increase, and jumps 3-1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart with a 9% audience gain.
