Despite five new entries in the top ten, overall album sales are down 3% over last week and down 2% over the same week last year. Year-to-date album sales remain down 5% over the same period in 2013. Physical CD sales are down 8% over last week, down 1% over the same week last year and down 5% year-to-date over 2013. Digital album sales are up 6% over last week, down 6% over the same week last year and down 7% year-to-date over 2013. Digital track sales are down 8% over last week, down 15% over the same week last year and down 13% year-to-date over 2013. Track-equivalent album sales are down 4.3% over last week and down 7.6% year-to-date over 2013.
Jason Aldean’s “Old Boots, New Dirt” debuts at number one on the Top Albums chart with 16,000 units sold. It is his second straight chart-topping album, following 2012’s “Night Train.” He is the third Country artist to score a No. 1 so far in 2014, following Miranda Lambert and Eric Church.
Hozier’s debut full-length self-titled album enters at No. 2 with 8,800 units sold. The Irish singer-songwriter performed on Saturday Night Live on the weekend and currently has a top five Modern Rock airplay hit with “Take Me To Church.”
