DESPITE FOUR NEW ENTRIES in the top ten, overall album sales are down 6% over last week and down 14% over the same week last year. Year-to-date album sales remain down 15% over the same period in 2013. Physical CD sales are down 6% over last week, down 22% over the same week last year and down 20% year-to-date over 2013. Digital album sales are down 6% over last week, down 7% over the same week last year and down 12% year-to-date over 2013. Digital track sales are up 2% over last week, down 15% over the same week last year and down 13% year-to-date over 2013. Track-equivalent album sales are down 3.2% over last week and down 14.3% year-to-date over 2013.

Ed Sheeran’s “X” debuts at number one on the Top Albums chart with 209,000 units sold, his first chart-topping album and best one week sales total to date. His debut album, “+,” entered and peaked at No. 5 with 42,000 units sold in 2012. It is the fifth biggest one week sales total so far in 2014.

Fellow Brit Sam Smith holds at No. 2 with “In The Lonely Hour,” posting 67,000 units sold.
