Thanks to one major superstar release, overall album sales are up 30% over last week and up 23% over the same week last year. Year-to-date album sales improve, now down 13% over the same period in 2013. Physical CD sales are up 31% over last week, up 17% over the same week last year and down 17% year-to-date over 2013. Digital album sales are up 30% over last week, up 30% over the same week last year and down 10% year-to-date over 2013. Digital track sales are flat over last week, down 15% over the same week last year and down 13% year-to-date over 2013. Track-equivalent album sales are up 21.5% over last week and down 12.9% year-to-date over 2013.

Taylor Swift’s “1989” debuts at number one on the Top Albums chart with close to 1.3 million units sold. It is nearly four times greater than the previous highest one week sales total in 2014. It is the first album to sell one million copies in a week since Swift’s last album, 2012’s “Red,” sold 1.2 million copies and it is the third time she has sold over one million copies in a single week. It is the biggest one week sales total since Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” sold 1.3 million units in 2002.
