DESPITE SIX DEBUTS IN the top ten, overall album sales are down 1% over last week and down 28% over the same week last year, when three albums sold at least 200,000 copies. Year-to-date album sales are now down 17% over the same period in 2013. Physical CD sales are up 1% over last week, down 33% over the same week last year and down 20% year-to-date over 2013. Digital album sales are down 3% over last week, down 25% over the same week last year and down 14% year-to-date over 2013. Digital track sales are down 1% over last week, down 24% over the same week last year and down 12% year-to-date over 2013. Track-equivalent album sales are down 0.9% over last week and down 15.3% year-to-date over 2013.
The “Frozen” soundtrack remains at number one on the Top Albums chart for the third straight week, and eighth week overall, with 161,000 units sold, nearly double the sales of the No. 2 album this week.
Shakira’s self-titled album scores the top debut of the week, entering at No. 2 with 84,000 units sold. It is her highest chart peak to date, surpassing the No. 3 position reached with her debut English album “Laundry Service” in 2001.
